Rotterdam Walking Tour: The Futuristic City

A Rotterdam private tour is a 2.5-hour walk through Europe’s most futuristic port city, rebuilt from scratch after the war. No windmills or tulip fields here: unconventional architecture rules. We will walk past glass skyscrapers, examine the famous yellow Cube Houses, see the spectacular Erasmus Bridge over the Nieuwe Maas waters, and reach the giant arch of the Markthal food market.

During our walk, we will see how boldly Rotterdam experiments with space. Here, historic ships are moored right against the backdrop of skyscrapers, and buildings openly defy the familiar laws of physics.

Cube Houses and the Pencil House: We will examine these unconventional projects and step inside a yellow cube to see how people actually live in such strange apartments.
Old Harbor (Oude Haven) and the White House: You will see buildings that survived World War II, surrounded by new glass high-rises.
The Depot’s Mirrored Bowl: We will walk up to this unique art storage museum. It is a massive, futuristic building whose mirrored facade reflects the entire city.
Modern Life on the Water: We will break down the houseboat phenomenon and find out what daily life is like in floating homes. I will explain why the city is heavily moving its infrastructure to the canals and how it came to be that literally everything floats here: from farms and buses to hot tub boats.
Markthal: We will finish the route inside a giant arch that combines food stalls and residential apartments. There, you can grab a bite and try the local maatjes herring.

How Does the Tour Work?

The route takes 2.5 hours, and the cost is €220. I organize the walk to make it as comfortable as possible for you:

Private Format: All my walks are strictly private; it will just be you and your loved ones.
Flexible Itinerary: While preparing, I will definitely take your preferences into account and focus on the topics that interest you the most.
Seasonal Bonus: In September, part of our route goes across the city’s open rooftops.

Can We Go by Bicycle?
Yes, the walking route can easily be swapped for a bike ride. Bike rental is paid separately (+€5 per person per day). This format gives us the chance to venture beyond the center: I will show you residential neighborhoods, the botanical garden, and the only surviving 16th-century old quarter.

What to Combine This Trip With

After the walk and lunch at the Markthal, we can take a ferry to the largest open-air windmill museum: Kinderdijk. The river trip takes 20 minutes. The duration of this add-on is 2 hours (cost €150, round-trip ferry tickets are €8 per person).
