Traveling with kids often means everyone has different expectations, little legs get tired before you see anything, and parents return to the hotel exhausted rather than relaxed. Our private canal cruise in Amsterdam is built differently: kids are captivated by pirate stories and keep an eye out for drawbridges, while you glide along the canals for an hour and a half, taking in the city from the water and finally exhaling. Just your family on board — no strangers and no rigid schedules.
Walking tours in Amsterdam with kids look great on paper. In practice, it means tired legs after 40 minutes, the constant “are we there yet?”, and trying to explain why another old building is important.
A canal cruise solves all this at once: the kids sit, look, listen — and don’t fuss. The route covers the main sights without the endless walking, and the water offers a completely different view of the city — one you can’t see from the sidewalk. During this 1.5-hour Amsterdam private tour, you will see more than you would in a whole day on foot.
The route through the historic center is designed to show locations that look most spectacular from the water:
The Golden Canal Ring — we will navigate the Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. This is where the famous narrow Dutch houses stand. They are crooked, “dancing,” and leaning in all directions — a living illustration of what happens when you build on a swamp.
The Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum) — we will approach the pier where a massive East India Company sailing ship is moored.
NEMO Science Museum — we will see the giant green building shaped like the bow of a ship. From the water level, it creates the illusion of a giant vessel sailing right toward us—a visual effect that always impresses kids.
The Amstel River and 17th-century bridges — we will exit the labyrinth of narrow canals into the “big water.” You will see the river where heavily loaded ships with spices and gold once entered the city, and sail right under its historic drawbridges.
Our captain isn’t just a helmsman. On board, he takes on the role of a pirate, but every tall tale is a real historical fact, adapted so that even four-year-olds listen closely.
Stories you will hear:
The Sea Beggars. You will learn how pirates helped the Netherlands gain independence. We will talk about the “Sea Beggars”— a volunteer fleet that terrorized Spanish ships in the North Sea.
The Secret of the Flying Dutchman. We will find out why Dutch merchant ships were called ghost vessels, how they moved at unprecedented speeds, and took control of a third of the world’s fleet.
The City on Trees. All of historic Amsterdam stands on thousands of Norwegian pine pilings driven into the swamp. When a child realizes there’s an entire underwater forest supporting the palaces — it is something they remember for a long time.
The Pirate Code and Golden Age Treasures. We will discuss the strict rules of corsairs—from dividing the loot to payouts for injuries. We will also find out what was carried in the holds: how a sack of nutmeg made a merchant rich, and why live tigers were brought to the city.
Many of our guests say they rested more during this time on the boat than during their entire previous day in the city.
The cost is €370 for the whole boat, not per person. This means the larger your group, the better the value. The boat holds up to 12 people. On sunny days, the deck is open for a 360° view; in the rain, there is a closed roof. There is a toilet and a drink bar on board.
Format: Private boat — only your family or group, no strangers.
Duration: 1.5 hours.
Starting location: Amsterdam historic center.
Is the Boat Safe and What Age is Best?
The program is designed for kids from 4 years old. The boat is extremely stable and has high sides, making the format completely safe. The captain captures all the little ones’ attention, so you don’t need to micromanage them — you can relax, chat, drink coffee from the bar, and admire the city from the water.
