Dutch Villages Tour from Amsterdam

This is one of the most scenic routes outside the city. Enjoy a comfortable car trip to three wonderful stops: Zaanse Schans, a traditional Dutch cheese farm, and the fishing village of Volendam. I have designed this Amsterdam private tour to show you the authentic side of the Netherlands: historic villages, well-kept promenades, and real working windmills.

Zaanse Schans Windmill Museum

We will start with the most famous open-air museum, where ancient mechanisms still work exactly as they did centuries ago. Here, we will:

• Look at historic windmills that aren’t just standing for decoration—they still saw wood, press oil, and grind spices.

• Explore the inner workings of the mills. We will step inside to see the wooden mechanisms in action and climb up to the observation decks.

• Visit a clog workshop, where traditional wooden shoes are carved from a single block of wood right before your eyes.

Cheese Farm and Edam Architecture

Next, we will visit a local farmer I know. This is the kind of quiet, countryside setting where native Dutch people prefer to live. In this part of the route, we will:

• Stop by a real farm and see the genuinely happy cows grazing in the local green meadows.

• Taste Edam cheese. You will visit one of the most respected cheese dairies, learn the secrets behind their ancient recipe, and have the chance to buy authentic Dutch cheese right on the farm.

• Stroll through old Edam to see its quiet canals, the oldest 16th-century wooden house, and the Playing Tower with its carillon (a traditional bell instrument).

Volendam Fishing Harbor

A guided trip to Volendam is the perfect opportunity to relax in the fresh air and enjoy incredible local seafood. In this fishing village, we will:

• Walk along the seaside promenade, look at traditional fishing boats, take great photos by the bay, and simply relax by the water watching the life of an authentic Dutch harbor (this is a living settlement, not a museum backdrop).

• Try fresh seafood. I know exactly where they serve the best smoked eel in Volendam and the famous “maatjes” herring.

• Drive to the island of Marken. If you wish, we can easily add a visit to this colorful neighboring island to our trip.

ORGANIZATIONAL DETAILS

• Duration: 6 hours (drives between towns are short, ranging from 6 to 27 minutes).

• Starting point: I will pick you up by car from your hotel or any convenient location in Amsterdam.

• Price: 500 euros for the car transfer and tour (maximum of 6 people). Transfers from other cities can be discussed additionally.

• Extra costs: Entrance tickets to the windmills, food, drinks, and souvenirs are not included in the price.

• Pets: The tour is pet-friendly.

Is the trip suitable for children?

Yes, this tour is perfect for a family trip. The format is not tiring at all, children will love the farm, and all locations are stroller-accessible.

What is the tour format?

This is a completely private excursion. It will be just you and your loved ones in the car. I will absolutely take all your wishes into account and focus on the topics that interest you the most.

Seasonal Events and Tour Additions

The route can be made even more interesting if you are planning your trip during the warmer months:

• Traditional markets and festivals: From April to September, Edam hosts traditional cheese markets, and in June, there is the herring festival.

• Tour addition: 🌷 During the “tulip season” (late March to early May), I highly recommend combining this trip with a guided drive to Keukenhof park.
