A 2-hour walking tour is your introduction to the political center of the Netherlands and its elegant royal architecture. I am Tatiana, your guide in The Hague. We will walk from the medieval Binnenhof to the diplomatic quarter: you will discover the name the Dutch themselves gave this city and see the working residence of the monarch.

How a Gothic Castle Became the Center of Modern Power

I will explain why The Hague became the main royal residence, even though it is not the official capital. Along our route, we will see where the country’s history is made:

  • Binnenhof and Ridderzaal — the medieval palace complex. Today, the Dutch government meets here, the king delivers ceremonial speeches, and the Prime Minister works in the famous “Little Tower” (Torentje).

  • Noordeinde Palace — the working residence of the monarch. We will walk right up to the king’s office, see the guards at the gates, and find out when he is actually here and where he truly lives.

  • Old City Hall and Grote Kerk (St. James’ Church) — the oldest buildings in the city. The former is still used to register civil marriages, while the latter is where newborn members of the royal dynasty are baptized.

  • Peace Palace — the famous home of the UN International Court of Justice with its tall Neo-Gothic tower.

Architectural Contrasts of the City

The Hague knows how to surprise: right behind austere historical facades, modern glass skyscrapers unexpectedly rise. I will show you this contrasting side of the city:

  • Plein Square — a historic spot where old mansions look spectacular against the backdrop of modern development. In the center stands the monument to William of Orange — the national hero the Dutch still sing about in their anthem.

  • City Details — along the way, we will look at an old pharmacy-museum and the monumental building of a former bank, perfectly woven into the architecture of old The Hague.
  • Mauritshuis Museum — we will view the elegant exterior of the palace housing the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” so you know exactly where to return after the tour.

A delicious pause along our route includes a tasting of farmer’s cheese and fresh, lightly salted Maatjes herring. I will run a masterclass on how to eat it properly. Yes, by the tail… just as the Dutch have done for centuries!

How do tours in The Hague work?

This is an exclusive The Hague private tour just for you and your loved ones. I lead the routes without any strangers in the group. The format is highly flexible: I will certainly take your wishes into account and focus on the topics that interest you most.

Where does the route start, and are tickets needed?

We meet right in the center — at the historic Plein square (Plein Den Haag) — and end our walk at the Peace Palace. Covering this route on foot in 2 hours is absolutely comfortable. There is no need to buy entrance tickets in advance: we view the palaces from the outside. At the end of the tour, from Wednesday to Sunday, you can enter the Peace Palace visitor center for free with an audio guide. Additional costs only apply for the optional tasting of farmer’s cheese and herring.
