Best Beaches in the Netherlands: Where to Find the North Sea and Why You Should Go

Beaches in the Netherlands — Scheveningen Ferris wheel and pier, Holland beach holiday

The beaches of the Netherlands are not what you expect. Forget palm trees and warm turquoise water. What you find here is something altogether different: an endless North Sea horizon, white sand drifting into high dunes, the smell of salt and fresh fish, and that vast Dutch sky that painters have been trying to capture for five hundred years. Scheveningen, Zandvoort, Bergen aan Zee, Noordwijk, Texel Island — each of these beaches has its own character, its own atmosphere, its own story. I’ve been bringing guests to the Dutch coast for nine years, and every time I see the same thing: people go quiet and just look at the water. That is the real Netherlands. In this guide, I’ll take you through my personal favourites — the best beaches in the Netherlands — with honest descriptions of what each one offers, practical tips, and ideas for combining a beach visit with a private tour of The Hague, Rotterdam or Texel Island.

When I first brought my clients from London to Scheveningen — the grand seaside resort just ten minutes from The Hague — they stood quietly for a long moment. Then one of them said: ‘Tanya, I didn’t expect the sea in Holland to feel so… real.’ And he was absolutely right. The beaches of the Netherlands are not a postcard from the Mediterranean. There are no palm trees or turquoise water. But there is something else entirely: an endless horizon, white sand fading into towering dunes, the smell of salt and fresh fish, and that extraordinary Dutch sky that painters have been capturing for centuries.

In nine years as a private guide, I’ve traveled nearly the entire Dutch coastline — from Kijkduin in the north to Hook of Holland in the south. Today I want to share my personal guide to the best beaches in the Netherlands: what’s there, when to go, and how to combine a beach visit with a private guided tour.

The North Sea in the Netherlands: What to Expect

The Dutch coastline stretches roughly 450 kilometres along the North Sea. This isn’t the warm blue water of southern Europe — but it is a genuinely alive, windswept, spectacular coastline: wide sandy beaches, dramatic dunes, crystal-clear air, and sunsets that will stay with you.

When to go? Beach season in the Netherlands runs from May through September. The warmest months are July and August (18–23°C air temperature, 17–19°C water). June and September are my personal favourites — quieter, gentler, and still beautiful.

Is the water warm? Honestly — not by Mediterranean standards. The North Sea reaches about 17–18°C in July, and up to 19–20°C in August. For bracing swims it’s perfect. For those who prefer watching the waves with a cold Dutch beer — that works beautifully too. 🍺

The Best Beaches in the Netherlands: My Personal Guide

🏖️ Scheveningen — The Netherlands’ Most Famous Beach

Scheveningen is the most popular beach in the Netherlands — and for good reason. A vast, lively resort with a long promenade, restaurants, entertainment, a casino, hotels and the magnificent Kurhaus hotel watching over the sea since 1887. Scheveningen is essentially the seaside district of The Hague, just 10–15 minutes from the city centre.

It’s the kind of place that has everything: sea, food, history, architecture. And it connects seamlessly with a cultural tour of The Hague.

What’s here:

  • 4-kilometre sandy beach with sunbeds and beach cabins
  • The Pier — panoramic views over the North Sea
  • Seafood restaurants right on the waterfront: fresh fish, mussels, oysters
  • Beach clubs, bars, shops and entertainment
  • Panorama Mesdag museum — a 360-degree 19th-century painting

💡 Guide’s tip:

Every Hague tour I run ends at Scheveningen. It’s 10 minutes from Mauritshuis and the Binnenhof. We walk the promenade, try fresh herring (haring) from a street stall by the sea, and watch the horizon. Culture and coast in one perfect day.

🏄 Zandvoort — The Beach Closest to Amsterdam

Zandvoort is the go-to beach near Amsterdam — just 30 km from the city centre. A busy, cheerful resort with a long promenade, a nudist section, dozens of beach bars, and the iconic Circuit Zandvoort, which hosts the annual Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix.

What’s here:

  • Around 9 km of beach — one of the longest in the Netherlands
  • Surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing
  • Nudist beach (designated area)
  • Beach clubs with food and live music
  • Famous Formula 1 racing circuit

💡 Guide’s tip:

Zandvoort pairs perfectly with a Haarlem tour. Medieval city + Dutch sea air is one of my favourite combinations. We visit the Sint-Bavokerk, walk the old streets, then drive 15 minutes to the coast for a coffee on the beach. A full, perfect day.

🌿 Bergen aan Zee — For Those Who Want Quiet

My personal quiet favourite — Bergen aan Zee. A small, elegant village nestled among dunes, with no casino, no mass tourism, no crowds. Just sea, white sand, a handful of lovely restaurants, and the kind of peace that’s increasingly rare.

The dunes here are extraordinary — high, covered with grass and berries, perfect for long walks. The nearby Kennemerland National Park is one of the best places in the country for nature walks.

What’s here:

  • Clean white beach without crowds (especially on weekdays)
  • Northern Dunes Natural Park
  • Restaurant right in the dunes with sea views
  • Short drive to Alkmaar, the famous cheese city

💡 Guide’s tip:

Bergen aan Zee combines beautifully with a visit to Alkmaar’s cheese market — held every Friday from April to September using traditional methods. After the market, 20 minutes and you’re at the sea. My idea of a perfect day in Holland.

🌸 Noordwijk — Sea and Tulips in One Day

Noordwijk is unique: it’s the only Dutch resort where you can see both tulip fields and the sea in a single day. In April and May the Bollenstreek bulb-growing region is just 10–15 minutes away.

The beach itself is long and spacious with excellent facilities. In summer it’s lively and popular with all ages. Good seafood restaurants line the promenade.

💡 Guide’s tip:

I often include Noordwijk in spring Keukenhof tours. But it’s equally wonderful in summer — after a tour of Leiden, we head to the coast. University city + sea air = a beautifully balanced day.

🐑 Texel Island — The Jewel of the North Sea

Texel is a world apart. The largest of the Dutch Frisian Islands, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the place where Dutch people go for a proper holiday. Thirty kilometres of wild beaches, dunes, a lighthouse, sheep, local cheese, local wine and beer. Yes — the island produces its own wine.

The main beach at De Koog is wide and well-equipped. But my favourites are the wild northern beaches, where it’s just you, the wind, the sea and — if you’re lucky — seals basking on the sand.

What’s here:

  • 30 km of beaches — from organised to completely wild
  • Seals visible from shore (or by boat tour)
  • Texel Lighthouse with panoramic views
  • Local cheese, wine, beer and lamb
  • De Slufter National Park — salt marshes and unique flora
  • Cycling routes across the entire island

💡 Guide’s tip:

A Texel tour is a full-day experience. We take the ferry together, and I drive you around the entire island: lighthouse, dunes, wild beaches, local food tasting. This is the ‘real Netherlands’ that people dream about. Write to me — I’ll tell you everything!

🏰 Kijkduin — The Quiet Alternative to Scheveningen

Another beach near The Hague — Kijkduin. More family-oriented and less touristy than Scheveningen. No casino, no big hotels, just a long clean beach, a small weekend market and the feeling of a genuine local resort.

💡 Guide’s tip:

If we’re touring The Hague on a weekend and you want quiet sea time after the museums, Kijkduin is ideal. Fifteen minutes by car from Mauritshuis.

Beach + Tour: How to Combine Sea and Culture in One Day

This is the real advantage of travelling with a private guide. I pick you up from your hotel or airport and build a route where everything flows naturally together: a museum or historic city in the morning, then open sea air and a sunset in the afternoon.

Tour: ‘The Hague + Scheveningen’ or ‘The Hague + Kijkduin’

The Hague is the political capital of the Netherlands — the city of Vermeer, Mauritshuis, and the Peace Palace. And ten minutes from its historic centre: the sea. My Hague tours always end with a walk along the promenade, fresh fish and a coffee with a North Sea view.

  • Mauritshuis (Girl with a Pearl Earring)
  • Binnenhof — medieval Parliament
  • Peace Palace — International Court of Justice
  • Scheveningen or Kijkduin promenade + fish market

Tour: ‘Rotterdam + The Hague + the Sea’

A full-day route — and one of my personal favourites for guests who want everything: modern architecture, world-class museums and the sea. Rotterdam + The Hague + Scheveningen = contemporary design + culture + nature.

  • Rotterdam: Erasmus Bridge, Cube Houses, Markthal
  • The Hague: Mauritshuis, Binnenhof, Escher in the Palace
  • Scheveningen: evening promenade, seafood, sunset over the North Sea

Texel Island Tour

Whether you’re spending one day or staying overnight, I organise everything: ferry crossing, a full island route by car, lighthouse visit, wild beaches, and local tastings. This is not just a beach day — it’s a complete guided experience of one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful destinations.

Practical Tips: What to Pack for a Dutch Beach Day

  • Weather changes fast — bring a light jacket or cardigan even in summer
  • Sunscreen is essential — sea wind hides sunburn until it’s too late
  • Best times to walk: early morning (before 10am) or evening (after 5pm)
  • Try fresh haring (herring) from a street stall on the promenade — a Dutch ritual
  • Parking at beaches is paid — around €2–5 per hour in summer
  • With a private guide, all logistics including parking are handled for you
