Squares, embankments, and a waterfront fortress are just the “postcard” version of Ghent. To see more, you simply need to slow your pace. My private tour in Ghent is built around the details. We will walk the old streets at a comfortable rhythm to explore the stone castle, cozy canals, and merchant guild facades with their unusual decor, often missed when exploring on your own.

What we will see in the center

  • Gravensteen Castle — a formidable stone fortress rising directly above the water in the middle of residential neighborhoods. We will walk around it and discover how the Counts of Flanders lived here.

  • St. Bavo’s Cathedral — we will step inside to see the famous Ghent Altarpiece by Van Eyck. I will share the history of this altarpiece—it holds many mysteries, which we will unravel without complicated academic terms.

  • St. Michael’s Bridge — the best viewpoint in the city. We will take a pause here to admire the three main towers and the facades of the merchant guilds along the embankment.

  • Belfry Tower and market squares — we will walk through the old market rows and listen to the sound of the carillon, a massive ancient musical instrument.

Local cuisine and relaxing by the water

During our walk, we will make sure to take comfortable breaks. We will step inside to warm up or rest, and at the same time, taste the pride of local cuisine:

  • Great Butchers’ Hall — we will visit the historic stone market hall, which now serves as a great spot featuring local farm delicacies.

  • Local beer and chocolate — I will point out where to find the best craft brews and which traditional Ghent dessert you should come back for after the walk.

  • Open boat ride — if you wish, at the end of the walk, you can hop on a boat to view the embankments and merchant houses from the water.
