Best Souvenirs from the Netherlands: A Luxury Shopping Guide by Private Guide Tatiana

Туристи у магазині делфтського фарфору в Нідерландах — що привезти з Голландії як подарунок люкс-класу

The Netherlands is a country you simply cannot leave empty-handed. I’m Tatiana, your private guide with 9 years of experience. The best souvenirs are not fridge magnets. They’re diamonds bought directly from the craftsman, cheese tasted straight from the farm, and memories that bloom in your garden every spring.

I’ve helped hundreds of tourists bring back from the Netherlands the things that are truly worth bringing home. Not because it’s in the guidebook—but because I know every place, every factory, and every farm myself. Let me be your guide to the world of Dutch shopping—from the diamond districts to the cheese shops by the canal.

Factory Diamonds — The Ultimate Luxury Souvenir

Amsterdam has been a global centre of the diamond industry since the 16th century. The cutting techniques developed here set standards still used worldwide.

Gassan Diamonds — A Legend Since 1945

Gassan Diamonds is one of the oldest diamond factories in Europe, founded in 1945 in a former synagogue. You don’t just buy here — you witness the entire process from rough stone to brilliant.

Why is a diamond here better value? You buy directly from the manufacturer, without dealer or retail markups. Every stone comes with an international certificate (GIA, HRD or IGI). Natural diamonds only.

💡 Why visit with a guide? I know the right questions, what to look for, and how to read a certificate. My clients always leave saying: “I’m so glad you were there.”

Antwerp — Diamond Capital of the World

For the full diamond experience, add the Antwerp & Brussels in One Day tour. Antwerp’s Diamond District processes around 80% of the world’s diamonds. An entire neighbourhood of boutiques, labs and auction houses.

Dutch Cheese — Buy It Straight from the Farm

Gouda and Edam — A Brief History

Gouda is a city that gave its name to the world’s most famous cheese. Weekly cheese markets here date back to the 13th century. Edam — the round red-rind ball — was shipped across oceans by Dutch sailors in the 17th century as a strategic food reserve: it keeps for months without refrigeration.

On a cheese farm tour with me, you will meet the cows whose milk becomes your cheese, taste over 30 varieties, and buy directly from the farmer. Quality Dutch cheese keeps for 3–4 months.

The cows are waiting for us — and I mean it. A cheese farm visit is one of the most heartwarming experiences for both children and adults.

Tulip Bulbs and Flower Seeds — A Living Souvenir

The Story of Tulipmania

In 1637, the Netherlands experienced the world’s first financial bubble — Tulipmania. A single rare tulip bulb sold for the price of a house on an Amsterdam canal.

Today the Netherlands produces around 3 billion tulip bulbs a year. The best place to buy: the flower fields themselves or Keukenhof park. I run tours in April and May when the fields are at their most spectacular.

Delft Blue Pottery — The Iconic Dutch Souvenir

From Imitation to Original

In the 17th century, Dutch traders imported fine blue-and-white Chinese porcelain. Delft potters began making imitations — and ended up creating an entirely original style recognisable worldwide.

The factory De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles (The Royal Porcelain Bottle) has been operating since 1653 and is the only authentic producer of Delft blue pottery with a royal warrant. Every piece is hand-painted.

On the Hague & Delft tour, I take you through Vermeer’s city and arrange a visit to the factory or the finest Delft pottery shops.

Chocolate and Dutch Sweets

Tony’s Chocolonely — Chocolate with a Purpose

Look for the large, unevenly divided bars of Tony’s Chocolonely in any Dutch supermarket. The uneven chunks are intentional: a symbol of inequality in the chocolate industry.

Tony’s launched in 2005 after a Dutch journalist exposed child slave labour on cocoa farms. 100% slave-labour free. Available at every Albert Heijn. €4–6 per large bar. Easy to transport, beautifully packaged.

Stroopwafels — A Dutch Classic

Two thin waffle discs with caramel filling. Invented in 1810 in Gouda. The rule: place on top of a hot cup of tea or coffee for 30–60 seconds — the caramel melts, the waffle softens. That’s how the Dutch eat them. Bring a box and the instructions.

Magnets, Clogs and Windmills — Small but Meaningful

Wooden clogs (houten klompen) were worn by all Dutch people until the 1960s. At the Zaanse Schans clog workshop, you can try them on, buy a pair and learn that in the 17th century a young man carved clogs for his beloved as a declaration of serious intentions.

Windmill souvenirs are a reminder of the extraordinary engineering civilisation you saw with your own eyes.

The Most Valuable Souvenir: Your Memories

The most important thing you take home from the Netherlands is stories. The diamond you chose beside the craftsman. The cow whose milk became your cheese. The tulips that will bloom in your garden next spring. That’s what I help create — with every itinerary, every story.

FAQ — Most Common Questions About Souvenirs from the Netherlands

❓ Can I bring tulip bulbs into the EU / UK / USA?

Yes, with the appropriate phytosanitary documents provided by the seller. I’ll help you choose certified goods and check the paperwork.

❓ Are Gassan diamonds really cheaper than in a jewellery store?

Yes — buying direct from the manufacturer saves 15–30% versus retail. The key is knowing what to choose. That’s exactly why a guide is worth having.

❓ Cheese: how much can I bring and how do I keep it?

Quality aged Dutch cheese keeps for 3–4 months. Fine in hand luggage and checked baggage. Farm cheese in vacuum packaging travels perfectly.

❓ How do I tell real Delft blue pottery from a Chinese copy?

Only buy from De Porceleyne Fles certified stores or authorised dealers. Authentic pieces have the De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles mark on the base, hand-painted detail (slight irregularities are visible), and a certificate of authenticity.

❓ Where do I buy Tony’s Chocolonely and how much is it?

Any Albert Heijn, Jumbo or Dirk supermarket nationwide. €4–6 per large bar. A selection of 5–6 flavours makes a perfect gift for colleagues — lightweight, beautiful, meaningful.

Tours for You

Guided tour of Gouda and Delft in one day

I invite you to visit these two different, but equally interesting cities that played a key role in the history of the kingdom. Both of them have an eventful history and unique architecture. And everyone can boast of their own "highlights". And we will find out which ones during our tour. What you will see:two of the most cozy and unusual cities in the Netherlands; ancient and modern architecture of two cities; workshops, where local "delicates" are prepared - chocolate and pastries; benches where famous cheese is sold; modern and vintage yachts in the harbor. What you will learn:who is William of Orange, where did the royal dynasty come from, and why do the Dutch regard him so much; the history of the birth of the Netherlands and everything about "Dutch gold" is crude; the history of the development of international law; about the richest trade campaign of all times and nations; about the tulip mania that once swept the Netherlands; about how the microscope was invented; about the most famous murder in the kingdom; about the famous painting "The Girl with a Pearl Earring"; the history of Delft white-blue porcelain; about the country's most famous philosopher; what local students can be proud of today. What you will do:you will discover two tourist "pearls" that are so different from noisy big cities; you will see perfectly preserved central parts of cities and new districts; take many beautiful photos; enjoy local delicacies. No one can claim to have seen the Netherlands without visiting these two ancient cities with such a fateful history for our kingdom! To fill this gap, use my proposal Gouda and Delft: one-day excursions. What are these places interesting for?Cheese capital Gouda is not only a family of world-famous cheese, but also a city of ancient architecture. Here you can see the buildings of the guilds of the XVI-XVII centuries, forming an ensemble on the central square of the city, the town hall, which looks more like a royal palace, and the most beautiful cathedral in the kingdom. There is a unique mill in Gouda, where a whole family lives. And it is also the birthplace of Erasmus, one of the most famous European philosophers of the Northern Renaissance. Our path will pass through such Gouda sights as:chocolate workshops: discover the secrets of making Dutch chocolate, enjoy a tasting and take away sweet souvenirs; bakeries of traditional Dutch sweets "stropwafel": you will try the famous waffles, prepared according to traditional recipes, and find out why they have become a symbol of Holland; family mill: a unique opportunity to visit an operating mill, get to know the family that lives in it, and see how old traditions are preserved; the largest ice cream shop in the country and its tasting, during which you will be treated to unique flavors and their unusual combinations; cheese shops: the variety of farm cheese from classic Gouda to unusual varieties with additives will impress even experienced gourmets! During the excursion, we will also reveal the secret of how Gouda garden and Gouda cheese are related, the name of which is pronounced differently in all countries of the world."Cradle" of the nation From Gouda, we will go to Delft, where the "father of the nation" William of Orange lived and ruled. It was from here that white and blue porcelain floated to all corners of the world, and the painter Vermeer created his "Girl with a Pearl Earring". The current ruling dynasty of the Netherlands originates from this city. It was in this city that the microscope was invented. And the ego is considered the cradle of international law.In Delft, historical buildings have been perfectly preserved, so lovers of antiquity will appreciate the local views. You will especially remember the leaning tower. And I will also show you where local delicacies are sold, and we will definitely try them. At the fish market, which has been in existence since the 14th century, we will receive a master class on the proper use of herring matias, and we will feast on delicious cheese and chocolate in small stalls.Excursions to the historical places of Gouda and Delft will be an ideal addition to the impression of our kingdom.
