Zaanse Schans is not a movie set, but a real village 20 km from Amsterdam (about a 20-minute drive). It smells of fresh wood and water here, the blades of 17th-century windmills creak overhead, and craftsmen work using age-old techniques. I will show you how this region became Europe’s first industrial center, where the wind replaced factory engines.

• I will take you inside working windmills. You will see firsthand the mechanisms that not only ground grain but also pumped water, sawed planks for thousands of Dutch ships, and ground pigments for Rembrandt’s paints.

• In the wooden shoe workshop, you will learn why clogs were a brilliant engineering solution for Dutch mud. You will watch a 19th-century machine in action and make sure to try on this unusual footwear.

• During the farmer’s cheese tasting, you will try everything: from delicate young Gouda to aged varieties with cumin and herbs.

• For a delicious break, I will suggest stopping for a cup of rich, hot cocoa made according to an ancient recipe. At the same time, I will tell you why the first chocolate in Europe was sold in pharmacies by prescription.

How Much Does the Tour Cost and What Is Included?

The total duration of the program is 4 hours. The price is for your entire group of up to 6 people.

• €450 (by car): I will pick you up from your hotel in Amsterdam, we will travel in my car, and I will bring you back at the end of the route.

• €350 (without transfer): We meet right on site—at the Zaandijk Zaanse Schans railway station or near the central parking lot. You arrive on your own (round-trip train tickets cost approximately €8 per person).

• Additional expenses: Entrance tickets to the windmills (about €6 per windmill or €17.50 for a combo ticket to all sites), food, souvenirs, and drinks are paid separately.
