Take a 5-hour trip from Amsterdam to explore one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and the country’s grandest castle. This is a fully personalized Utrecht private tour exclusively for your group of up to 6 people. The itinerary is flexible and tailored entirely to your pace and interests.

Split-level canals and craft beer in a church

We will start in Utrecht’s historic center, famous for its unique split-level canals where old merchant cellars have been transformed into cozy waterfront terraces.

Our walk begins at the Dom Tower and its cathedral, the oldest church in the country. We will spot cannonballs wedged into residential walls from the Hundred Years’ War and pass the former home of the only Dutch Pope in history.

To understand the pragmatic local approach to religion, we will visit a former Protestant church. Today, it houses a lively cafe pouring local craft beer and serving hot bitterballen—the perfect spot to discuss how religious wars shaped modern Dutch society.

De Haar Castle: The Rothschild legacy

After exploring the city for two hours, we will take a short drive to De Haar Castle. Rebuilt from medieval ruins at the turn of the 20th century and financed by the Rothschild family, it was transformed into a lavish palace featuring cutting-edge comforts for its era, including central heating and a private hair salon.

You will learn why the tableware was exclusively designed for the estate and hear about the strict rules the baron enforced on his high-society guests. We will wander through halls that once hosted Hollywood royalty, with plenty of time to explore the expansive grounds and rose gardens afterward.
