Texel is defined by its rugged northern landscapes and the endless beaches made famous by the movie Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. On this day trip from Amsterdam, I’ll take you to these vast shores, local sheep farms, and seal colonies, while introducing you to the island’s best culinary spots.

  • Duration: 8–9 hours

  • Transport: Comfortable vehicle (up to 6 people)

  • Starting point: Your accommodation in Amsterdam

  • Format: Private Texel tour (just you and your group)

What to see on Texel: lighthouses, beaches, and film locations

If you’re wondering how to see the best of Texel in a single day, this itinerary covers all the highlights. You’ll learn how the modern island differs from the mainland, how fierce storms shaped its dunes, and the crucial role its harbors played during the Dutch East India Company era. I’ll walk you along the very same endless North Sea beaches featured in the iconic movie finale.

I’ll show you the historic lighthouse and the resort town of De Koog, cleverly hidden from storms behind a line of sand dunes.

We’ll visit the authentic port of Oudeschild. Ships still dock here today, and I’ll explain how the modern fishing industry operates.

The itinerary adapts to the seasons: in April, we stop by the tulip fields; in late summer, we visit the blooming heather moorlands; and in September, you might catch the large-scale regatta festival.

Seals, sheep farms, and local flavors

Texel is renowned for its wildlife conservation and rich farming heritage. We’ll definitely visit local producers so you can taste the region’s specialties.

  • Local sheep farms: The island is home to over 30 breeds of sheep. You’ll visit a farm to interact with the animals and learn all about the native Texel breed.

  • Craft beer and cheese: The route includes a visit and tasting at the famous Texel brewery. At the local markets, you can try traditional sheep cheese and fresh herring.

  • Seal watching (optional): You can visit the Ecomare center, a sanctuary for rescued marine life, or take a boat ride directly to the seal colonies, home to around 800 seals. In September, you can also catch the massive regatta festival here.

How is the trip organized and how do we get to Texel from Amsterdam?

Expect a full-day road trip lasting around 8–9 hours. I’ll pick you up directly from your location in Amsterdam. The drive to the Den Helder ferry terminal takes about 1.5 hours, followed by a scenic 20-minute crossing, and then we’re on the island.

I handle all the logistics and purchase the ferry tickets. Since this is a strictly private experience, it will just be you and your group. The itinerary is completely flexible, and I’ll gladly tailor the day to focus on your specific interests.

What is included in the price and what are the extra costs?

The base price for the tour is 750 euros per vehicle for groups of 1 to 6 people. This includes my guiding services, round-trip transportation from Amsterdam, ferry tickets, a visit and tasting at the brewery, entry to the sheep farm, and stops at the Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door film locations and De Koog.

Food, drinks, and optional entrance fees are paid separately. For your reference (2026 prices): climbing the lighthouse costs 6.50 euros, Ecomare center tickets are 17 euros, and boat trips to the seal colonies range from 20 to 40 euros per person depending on the vessel type.
