This is my personal favourite route out of Belgium. In a single day you’ll experience three completely different worlds: a medieval fortress above a confluence of rivers, the most photogenic town in Belgium, and one of Europe’s most beautiful capital cities. And all of it at your own pace, in the comfort of a private car — no strangers, no rushed group schedules.

What’s included:

Namur — the view from above: We start at the Citadelle de Namur, one of the largest fortresses in Europe. From its ramparts you’ll see the famous confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers — that striking “trident” of water that draws photographers from across the world. Below lies a charming old town with a quiet riverside promenade that feels a world away from the tourist crowds.

The road along the Meuse & Dinant: The drive from Namur to Dinant is a pleasure in itself. The road winds between vertical limestone cliffs and the still surface of the river, past medieval castles (including Château de Freÿr), tiny villages carved into the rock face, and climbers scaling the crags. Cinematic from start to finish. In Dinant, we’re greeted by the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church with its iconic onion-shaped dome, the towering Rocher Bayard, and a bridge lined entirely with bronze saxophones — this is the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the man who invented the instrument that made jazz possible.

Luxembourg City — the Gibraltar of the North: The grand finale. Luxembourg City is a fortress town carved by the deep valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. We’ll walk the Chemin de la Corniche — nicknamed “the most beautiful balcony in Europe” — overlooking the fairy-tale lower town of Grund. Then down into the Bock Casemates: 23 kilometres of tunnels hewn into the rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll also see the Grand Ducal Palace and the country’s only cathedral, built by Jesuits in the 17th century and home to the ducal crypt.
