A major event in the world of popular art—the Amsterdam Light Festival—kicks off around the New Year. It attracts large crowds, so be sure to book your travel tickets, canal boat tours, walking tours, and reservations at clubs and restaurants well in advance. Read on to learn more about the Amsterdam Light Festival, its history, and the upcoming program.
What is the Amsterdam Light Festival?
When daylight hours are at their shortest and the nights are long, Amsterdam comes alive with a multitude of artificial lights. After all, the darkness of night provides the perfect backdrop for light-based art installations.
The Amsterdam Light Festival takes place annually from mid-november to mid-January, enhancing the city’s festive atmosphere. This is no ordinary display of holiday lights; it is an exhibition of original artworks centered around a unifying theme. It is no exaggeration to say that the Amsterdam Light Festival is a significant event in the world of contemporary popular art. Each year, the creativity behind these illuminated art installations grows, requiring increasingly sophisticated technology—all to dazzle the audience. This makes attending the event an ever more exciting experience.
So, when does the Amsterdam Light Festival take place? The upcoming 15th edition of the festival is just around the corner. It runs from November 26, 2026, to January 17, 2027. Every day after 5:00 PM, visitors can view masterpieces of contemporary light art from around the world at various locations across the city! Each year, the distinguished jury carefully selects artworks and places them in specific locations to further reveal the meaning behind each installation.
Tourists flock to the city to admire light displays that compete in originality. Artists, designers, and architects from around the world create masterpieces based on the theme announced by the festival’s organizing committee. For instance, the 2026–2027 Amsterdam Light Festival will mark a special anniversary. The organizers aim to showcase a different side of Amsterdam, while the creators are free to interpret this concept visually however they wish. We will soon see the results for ourselves. The Amsterdam Light Festival has selected works from 27 participants worldwide; some are returning collaborators. At the festival’s conclusion, a vote will be held to determine the best artwork.

Festival History
The Amsterdam Light Festival is not the only event of its kind; similar festivals have long been held in cities across the globe. The tradition actually began in Lyon, France, as far back as 1643. At that time, the plague was ravaging France, and the city’s residents appealed to the Virgin Mary for help, praying for protection from the scourge. Indeed, the city was spared from the terrible disease. In celebration, the people of Lyon held a festival in the saint’s honor, featuring the consecration of a gilded bronze statue of the Virgin Mary. It took place on December 8. Immediately after the consecration ceremony, a torrential downpour broke out, sending the townspeople scurrying home. The bad weather did not subside until nightfall. However, the people of Lyon refused to forgo the festivities and celebrated by the light of countless candles. This practice became a tradition, though candles eventually gave way to electric lighting.
Our winter Light Festival in Amsterdam has no religious connection. It was conceived as a small, vibrant celebration for visitors during the gloomy winter season—an event designed to fill Amsterdam’s canals with brilliant colors and new, symbolic, and sometimes enigmatic imagery that invites philosophical reflection. Its creators are Vincent Horbach and Henk van Buchel. In 2009, they decided to organize a “Christmas Canal Parade,” featuring illuminated vessels sailing along Amsterdam’s watery “streets.” The first Amsterdam light festival was a resounding success, prompting a repeat event the following year. This time, a land-based exhibition of light installations was added to the water show. It was a hit once again! Like a snowball rolling downhill, the festival steadily gained momentum, attracting ever-growing numbers of participants and spectators. The 2026–2027 Amsterdam Light Festival promises to be an extraordinary and spectacular event!
How the Amsterdam Light Festival Works
Each year, the organizing committee announces the festival’s theme and begins accepting participation proposals. Next comes the painstaking task of selecting a winner through a voting process. Once a sufficient number of projects have been selected, the installation phase begins. By the way, 1,100 children were involved in creating one of the works for this educational project; they wrote their wishes on small “streams” of light. What a wealth of emotion and hope—and what an unconventional concept!
Let us tell you where the Amsterdam Light Festival takes place. Part of the exhibition
It is situated on land in the central Vesperbuurt and Plantage district, near the NEMO Science Museum, along the Amstel River, and on the city’s main canals. However, this year—in honor of the city’s anniversary—the Amsterdam Light Festival route is being expanded. For instance, one of the artworks will be placed right in the city center. Another part of the exhibition, titled “Water Colors,” is designed to be viewed from the water; it runs along the Herengracht canal—passing under bridges—as well as along other canals and the Amstel River. The reflection of light on the water’s surface creates additional visual effects, a feature the artists have masterfully utilized. We know the exact locations of all the installations, and our canal boat cruise route is carefully planned so that every guest can learn the symbolic meaning behind each piece from their captain-guide.
The 2026–2027 Amsterdam Light Festival offers a unique opportunity: not only can you discover the city’s history and view its major landmarks while cruising the canals, but you can also get a close-up look at masterpieces of contemporary art, learn their symbolic significance from a professional Amsterdam guide, and capture fantastic photos and videos as keepsakes. Experience the Amsterdam Light Festival while enjoying drinks and snacks aboard a comfortable, heated boat; a unique 1.5-hour tour of the evening city awaits, featuring installations that seem to emerge unexpectedly from the canals—right within arm’s reach! It is an extraordinary experience—a true winter fairy tale—that promises unforgettable memories for both adults and children. During the day, the festival installations “rest,” but after dark, everything is beautifully illuminated: from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Sundays through Tuesdays, and from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Wednesdays through Saturdays. This is the perfect time to experience not only the evening charm of Amsterdam—with its magical “gingerbread” houses—but also a spectacular display of light right on the city’s waterways. The 2026–2027 Amsterdam Light Festival offers optional food tours, allowing you to savor local cuisine while enjoying the excursion. You can order drinks and snacks on board, or let us know your specific requests in advance so we can prepare accordingly. The Amsterdam Light Festival walking route allows you to view the exhibited artworks right in the heart of the city. You simply stroll through the city streets after 5:00 PM, admiring the creations of master lighting artists.

Why is it worth visiting the Amsterdam Light Festival (winter 2026–2027) with a guide? If it’s your first time in Amsterdam, locating every installation—even with a map—can be a challenge. While the meaning of some art pieces is immediately apparent, others are difficult to fully appreciate without expert commentary. I carefully plan our tour route to showcase the most interesting and unique highlights. We’ll sample local delicacies, and I’ll happily take photos and videos for you to cherish as keepsakes.
The influx of festival tourists brings a surge of activity to every aspect of life in Amsterdam. With various exhibitions and performances taking place, you certainly won’t be bored after admiring the light sculptures; you can extend your festival experience by attending other events. Museums, shops, and restaurants await you with open arms. I recommend combining a canal boat cruise with a visit to the Van Gogh Museum. If you’re staying in the Netherlands for a few days, be sure to book a tour of the Dutch countryside or visit regal The Hague, Rotterdam, or De Haar Castle. I also have a guide to Amsterdam hotels ready for you.
